Mexico’s Deputy Finance Minister Highlights Investment Opportunities in Saudi Arabia

Riyadh, May 2023

Mexico’s Deputy Finance Minister, Gabriel Yorio González, emphasized his country’s strong interest in deepening economic cooperation with Saudi Arabia, describing the Kingdom as a country of “infinite opportunities.”

During a two-day official visit to Riyadh from May 28–29, the minister expressed Mexico’s intention to become a long-term partner in Saudi Arabia’s ongoing transformation. The visit was part of a broader Gulf tour aimed at strengthening trade and attracting inward investment to Mexico.

“We see infinite opportunities for partnership,” said González. “We share a strategic interest in trade, food security, sustainable infrastructure, energy transition, and water.”

He noted the importance of establishing a vibrant Mexican presence in Saudi Arabia, particularly as both countries embark on large-scale development and infrastructure projects.

This visit marked the first official mission to Saudi Arabia by a joint delegation from the Mexican Ministries of Finance and Foreign Affairs. The delegation held meetings to explore collaboration in areas such as culture, tourism, water desalination, and financial markets.

“We agreed to bring together enterprises to identify synergies,” González added. “Both countries are launching transformative infrastructure programs, and resource mobilization will be key.”

The delegation also toured major development hubs including NEOM’s “The Line” exhibition and the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD), where they witnessed some of the Kingdom’s most ambitious projects.

According to the Mexican Embassy in Riyadh, this visit stems from a commitment made during Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard’s diplomatic mission in March 2022, marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Saudi Arabia.

Vice Foreign Minister Carmen Moreno Toscano, who joined the trip, emphasized the shared trajectory of both nations:

“Mexico, like Saudi Arabia, is undergoing a profound transformation — one focused on equality, prosperity, and environmental justice.”

With Mexico benefiting from the nearshoring trend and international firms relocating due to favorable trade agreements and economic fundamentals, both nations see new momentum for bilateral investment and strategic alignment.
